Timothy Sini sworn in: ‘We must restore’ trust in Suffolk P.D.

Timothy Sini was sworn in Thursday as Suffolk County police commissioner and pledged to restore the public’s trust in the department after a former chief was convicted of violating a suspect’s civil rights and orchestrating a cover-up.

Sini, a former federal prosecutor who until recently served as deputy county executive, replaces former Police Commissioner Edward Webber at the helm of the police department.

Sini, 35, was County Executive Steve Bellone’s hand-picked choice to replace Webber, who announced his retirement late last year, when the department was undergoing a tumultuous period following the departure of several top commanders.

SUFFOLK CALLS ON CUOMO TO REJECT THE DREDGE MATERIAL MANAGEMENT PLAN (DMMP)

At a press conference on February 23rd at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Smithtown, New York, several Suffolk County Legislators were joined by environmental advocates and residents to urge Governor Andrew Cuomo to reject the Dredge Material Management Plan (DMMP), proposed by the Army Corps of Engineers. When the public asked for more responsible alternatives for the disposal of dredge materials, the United States Army Corps of Engineers failed to deliver. The new plan, released in January, outlined the continuation of dredge dumping in the Long Island Sound for 30 additional years without addressing possible beneficial reuses.

Democratic Congressional hopefuls meet in first public debate

The two candidates vying for the Democratic nomination in the June 28 primary for the First Congressional District seat squared off in what was their first public debate Wednesday night.

Former Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst of Bridgehampton and attorney and former Suffolk County Planning Commission Chairman Dave Calone of Setauket are seeking the nomination to oppose Republican incumbent Lee Zeldin in the November general election.

In an event sponsored by the East Hampton Town Democratic Committee and hosted at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church in Amagansett, the candidates gave their backgrounds and then answered questions submitted by the committee on specific topics. There were no questions from the public.

Newest Councilwoman Mary Dudley

Mary Dudley is a busy, organized and practical woman, who has spent most of the last 30 years working as a paralegal in upstate New York. She’s lived and worked on Shelter Island for three-and-a-half years, and three weeks ago was sworn in as the newest Town Board member, after being selected unanimously from a field of nine.

Oh, she also bakes her own bread.

Supervisor Dougherty Sworn into 5th term

Town officials were sworn in on January 5th at Town Hall. Supervisor Jim Dougherty took his oath of office after he was re-elected to his fifth term of office in November. There were also two new Town Board members, Jim Colligan and Mary Dudley. Mary Dudley was appointed by the Town Board following the resignation of Ed Brown from his Council position.| read more ››

Quinn Karpeh was a Shelter Island “summer kid” before he knew that his future would demand his full time presence here. But his love of the Island from childhood and his recent election to public office as an assessor clinched the deal on staying.

Mr. Karpeh ran unopposed, knowing he would be changing jobs, leaving Chase Bank where he has been a personal business banker. But he never expected he would garner the highest number of votes of anyone on the Shelter Island ballot — 1,077, according to the final tally from the Suffolk County Board of Elections.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone on Sunday touted his Connect Long Island plan to attract young professionals to the region with more mass transit options and vibrant downtowns, saying in a radio interview he wants to lead "one of the best, hottest places in the country for young people to be."

"We have to reverse the brain drain," Bellone said. "We've got to get young people wanting to be here in Suffolk County, on Long Island, put stakes down here if we're going to have an innovation economy."

Bellone delivers Suffolk State of the County

WOODBURY - Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone delivered his fourth and final State of the County address Thursday night.

Bellone focused on the challenges of stopping the so-called "brain drain" of young professional Long Islanders moving elsewhere because of the high cost of living and lack of opportunities on the Island.

The executive unveiled a project called "Connect Long Island," which would build a network of downtowns with transportation links to job centers, research centers, parks and open space. Connect Long Island would also encourage innovation companies to set up shop in those downtowns and construct affordable housing.

With blood shortage at emergency levels, Southold FD hosts blood drive today

The New York Blood Center has issued an emergency blood appeal after the region lost approximately 3,000 pints of blood because of the blizzard last week.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has called on “every capable donor to come out and donate blood” to alleviate “the largest single shortage of blood donations since Superstorm Sandy because of donation center closings and blood drive cancellations.”

Bellone and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy donated blood Jan. 28 at the N.Y. Blood Center donation center in Bohemia.

“Our blood supply relies exclusively on the generosity of volunteer blood donors,” according to New York Blood Center. “There is no substitute for human blood.”

Suffolk Marathon Designated as Boston Marathon Qualifier

(Long Island, NY) County Executive Steve Bellone joined Suffolk County Legislators Steve Stern, Kara Hahn, Bill Lindsay III, and Rob Calarco as well as local veterans, business owners, members of the running community and the Greater Long Island Running Club to announce that registration for the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon is officially open to the public.
