SHELTER ISLAND DEMOCRATS VOTE STRONG
Unofficial Presidential Primary Results
Shelter Island, NY, April 20, 2016– Shelter Island Democrats surpassed previous presidential primary turnouts this Tuesday. The unofficial results are as follows: 298 registered Democrats voted in person, in addition to 95 absentee ballots that were requested. Of the registered Republicans, 234 voted in person, in addition to the 34 absentee ballots that were requested. The voting was relatively smooth, yet at least 31 affidavits were used. Final tallies will be certified by the Board of Elections at a later date.
SIDC Town Chair, Heather Reylek stated, “Shelter Island Democrats are engaged and informed. They realize how important this November election will be and they want to choose the best candidate. The Poll workers did an incredible job this Tuesday. It’s a long day and they have two more primaries, plus the General Election ahead of them.”
The raw votes gave Hillary Clinton 174 and Bernie Sanders 124. (Absentees and affidavits not included). On the Republican side, raw votes were 144 for Trump, 15 for Cruz, 72 for Kasich and amazingly, 3 for Carson (it was too late to remove Carson from the ballot). As of April 1, 2016, the BOE enrollment summary shows 796 registered democrats on Shelter Island and 709 registered republicans.
SIDC Town Chair, Heather Reylek added, “It appears that there are benefits to being registered with one of the major parties when it comes to primaries. Every state has different election rules. New York has closed primaries and it has served us quite well for a very long time.”
The next primary will be June 28th for Congressional District #1. This will be for registered democrats only. Your vote is your voice.
