Jay Card

Shelter Island Highway Superintendent

Jay Card was elected as Superintendent of Highways in 2011. His position is the second most important office in Shelter Island Town government, second only to the Supervisor. Two years ago he pledged to be a leader by delegating responsibility to his employees paired with accountability. He has developed plans for Shell Beach, used the MS-4 plan to prioritize and protect the bays and aquifers. And as promised, he has made the recycling center an organized and friendly place. The past two years have been spent evaluating operations for efficiency, identifying shared resource opportunities, and generating revenue at the recycling center.

Jay Card is a local business owner (since 1982) and retired Administrative Police Sergeant. His educational background includes Suffolk County Police Academy for Supervisors (1997), Suffolk County Police Academy (1985), State University at Farmingdale (1984), and a true “local”; he graduated with the Class of 1980 at Shelter Island High School. He has been closely involved in the community in areas of sports, recreation, conservation and volunteerism. Jay and his wife, Judy have raised their three children here on Shelter Island.
